Sometimes I wonder

Yesterday when I was getting ready for work, I noticed something strange. Suddenly it was a little more painful to do the mundane - like iron my clothes, brush my teeth, bend over to tie my shoes. For some reason when I performed these tasks, I felt a sharp pain in my back like I was being stabbed repeatedly with a very sharp butcher’s knife. Throughout the day, I was constantly reminded of this pain whenever I turned around to talk to someone or work on my computer. So at lunch, I went and bought some Aleve.

I did as the instructions said. Take one, wait an hour, then take another one. I could then take one more 8 to 12 hours later, but I couldn’t exceed three pills in twenty-four hours. As the end of that 24-hour period approached, I seriously felt like exceeding that limit. Nothing seemed to help “aleve”-iate the pain.

So I took off work today to go to the doctor. As usual, I had to wait a while before I could see him. An hour after I arrive, I get called back. The nurse asks me, “So are we sick today?” I say, “Well, I have a little bit of back pain. It seems to have appeared out of nowhere.” She gives me the funniest look, does a little embarrassed chuckle, playfully punches me on the shoulder, and says, “What?!” I look at her, and wonder: What is up with her? I just said it appears to come out of nowhere. So I repeat myself, and then she laughs and says, “Oh! I thought you said ‘I started my period today!’” I just smile, laugh a little, and then I get to wondering about her hearing…Maybe she’s the one who needs to see a doctor! (Or maybe…Nah, I won’t think about that.)

Finally I get to the examination room. The hearing-impaired nurse takes my blood pressure, asks if I want an excuse, I say “Yeah”, then she walks out. Ten minutes later he walks in; we have the usual small talk. He asks me if I did anything that could have contributed to the pain. I told him, “Nothing out of the ordinary.” Meaning no real manual labor. I sit at a desk at work and plug away at computers. What about that could cause back pain? Well, he pokes around my back, asking me if it hurts. I say “nope”. He lifts my right arm and rotates it around a bit. “Does that hurt?” “Nope”, I say.

Then he proceeds to tell me, “Your back muscles are spasming. They are really, really tense.” I go, “Hmmm.” How in the world could they have been injured to the point of spasming?? I have not really done anything lately that could throw them into a frenzy.

Then I get to wondering. You see, back on the day before Thanksgiving in 2004, I was involved in a pretty serious wreck (for me, at least). I wasn’t really injured, per se, but ever since then I’ve noticed little things different with my body. My back hurts more often. If I put my arms on the back of a couch or up on a computer desk for too long, they start tingling something fierce. My neck gets stiffer and more often. So I’m just wondering if maybe this is the next thing in a line of minor inconveniences. Oh well. Such is life. I’ll just get my muscle relaxers and pain meds and be off to la-la-land.

Oh, and as a P.S. to this post (not that it really relates or anything), I just finished the second book in the Odd Thomas series - Forever Odd by Dean Koontz.  Very entertaining.  Just need to get the next one now.

Sunday Refreshment

Recently I have been, um, not exactly the perfect model of a Christian.  I have let other things get in my way of going to church, whether it be television or the computer or just something small that I wanted to do other than go to church.

But today, I changed all that.  I went to church:  Sunday school, morning service, and evening service.  And I thoroughly enjoyed it.  It was truly a blessing to get back into the swing of things as for as going to church.  It was truly a refreshing, rewarding experience.

I am determined to not let anything get me down, get me discouraged, and get me from going to church.  That is one thing I wish I could go back and change, but I can’t get this year back.  If there are any Christians out there who are feeling down, depressed, frustrated with their church, I strongly urge you to talk to someone in your church:  family, friends, church leaders, your pastor, anyone.  Don’t let Satan get in your life and keep you from going to church.  Go.  Do.  Be a part of it.  It will bless your heart and your life.

As the old Nike slogan goes:  Just do it.

Here’s today’s scripture, from Psalms 57:10:

For thy mercy [is] great unto the heavens, and thy truth unto the clouds.

What a weekend!

GCHS receiver Alonzo Lawrence goes for football This weekend has been the best weekend for football. Friday night, my high school alma mater, George County High School, beat the unbeaten team, Ocean Springs, 21 - 0!! You’re talkin’ about good football! A team that was scoring an average of 35 points per game was held from scoring any points! They were also held from getting within their own 38 yard line! There were numerous penalties, but most were against Ocean Springs, a number of them were facemask penalties (most of which were quite obvious).

Then yesterday, my college alma mater, Mississippi State University, played at home against the University of Alabama. Alabama wasAnthony Johnson runs 100 yards for a touchdown! (note, I said was) ranked 21st in the nation. Alabama scored first, scoring three unanswered field goals. Then, the Bulldogs were able to score a field goal, making it 9 - 3. Alabama then went on an impressive drive to try and score a touchdown. They were on the two-yard line, and John Parker Wilson dropped back to make a pass. MSU’s cornerback, Anthony Johnson, anticipated the pass. He made the interception two yards behind the goal line, ran the full length of the field, and was able to score a touchdown for MSU! A one-hundred-yard return!! State led the game 10-9 at this point. Later, MSU made another touchdown and Alabama was able to score another field goal, but it wasn’t enough. State defeated the No. 21 Alabama Crimson Tide 17 - 12!! Now State is on their way to going to the Independence Bowl for the first time since 2000!

We also had a pretty good breakfast yesterday morning at my parents’ house. It was a traditional southern breakfast: eggs, grits, bacon, patty sausage, Conecuh link sausage, and homemade biscuits. Yum, yum!

Tonight is “The Clash of the Titans”

I know I really haven’t been covering high school football, simply because I haven’t been going to the games. My alma mater, George County High School, has really been doing good this year in football. As a matter of fact, they are ranked number two statewide in the Associated Press Poll, per the Sun Herald. But tonight, the Region 4-5A champion will be decided.

GCHS plays at home tonight versus Ocean Springs High School, who is 9-0 overall this year, 6-0 in division. George County is 9-1 overall, 6-0 in the division. Their only loss was to Wayne County High School, who is 7-3 overall, 3-3 in their division, Region 5-4A (Source: MaxPreps Sports). Wayne County versus George County has always been a tough rivalry.

Both Ocean Springs and George County are guaranteed to host the first week of playoffs next week, so as far as that goes, this game doesn’t dictate that. But it is for the division championship, so it should be a close, tough game. I will definitely be there, and I’m sure that most of Lucedale and Ocean Springs will be, too.

Illegal Immigrant Watch: 23 I.I.s Arrested, Using Fake Badges to Work at O’Hare

Per Fox News:

Nearly two dozen illegal immigrants were arrested Wednesday, accused of using fake security badges to work in critical areas of O’Hare International Airport, including the tarmac, authorities said.

The 23 illegal workers were employed by Ideal Staffing Solutions Inc., whose corporate secretary and office manager also were arrested after an eight-month investigation that involved federal, state and Chicago authorities.

This is disturbing, very disturbing.  Not only the fact that this company employed illegal immigrants, but this also:

Agents found that 110 of the 134 badges issued to Ideal Staffing workers did not match the individuals who carried them, he said.

This is a textbook case of a company harboring illegal aliens.  This company ought to be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.  However, two people were charged:

Mary Gurin, 36, of Carpentersville, and Norinye Benitez, 24, of Franklin Park, were each charged with one federal count of harboring illegal immigrants for gain and one federal count of misuse of Social Security numbers. They were scheduled for a preliminary appearance later Wednesday in U.S. District Court, [Alissa] Brown [an ICE agent] said.

Now who are these people?  Well, Benitez is an illegal immigrant from Mexico and Gurin hired her and signed her airport badge application.  Gurin knew that Benitez was an illegal.

Now here’s another interesting statistic:  100 arrest warrants were issued.

We definitely need more of this around the nation.  Go ICE!  You’ve got millions of American citizens supporting you!

Bentz wins Public Service Commissioner

Well, the race wasn’t as close as I thought it was.  Here’s the final results from the Public Service Commissioner race:

Leonard Bentz (R) (inc) - 57% (131,755)

Mike Collier (D) - 43% (101,209)

Apparently, Jim Hood was the only Democrat to win the statewide race this go around.  Mississippi is truly bleeding red!

Update (9:11 A.M.):  After looking over the results again, I discovered I was premature in calling Senate District 43.  Shannon Walley lost!

Wow, look how close those results are! I guess I’ll have to wait till in the morning to find out the results. Well, I’m off to bed. Good night all!

“On the blog again…”

I’m uh…tinkering with my blog again.  I changed from Movable Type to Textpattern to Nucleus to Textpattern again to Movable Type again…*SIGH*  Now I’m back with Wordpress.  I just couldn’t find anything that made me as happy as WP.  I just love it.  Plugins and themes are extremely easy to add and modify.  And I believe I’m not alone.  I have been on Wordpress now going on…uh, how long?  8 months?  Before that I used Typepad (which wasn’t too bad).

I don’t think I’ll be changing it again anytime soon.
