Rebels Make It to South State Finals

Well, the George County High School Rebels baseball team has done it - they have made it to the South State Championships amidst scandal.  They were able to defeat the Harrison Central Red Rebels 7-6 in eight innings.  Per The Sun Herald:

The victory vaults George County, (20-12), into the South State finals next Saturday at 7 p.m. where they travel to Oak Grove to take on the Warriors.

"We have started to play well the past few weeks," George County coach Ronnie Powell said. "I am very proud of the way our guys responded today."

And there is still no resolution to the genital-photo-taking issue.  Plainly the local school board and school administration is waiting until the baseball season is over to do anything to the boys who ("allegedly") sexually assaulted their teammate.  Although an "investigation" was launched, the George County High School principal Paul Wallace has said that the investigation has turned up no evidence of anything other than horseplay.  That per a Sun Herald article on April 23…Don’t you love local politics?

Quote of the Day - April 30, 2007

When a deep injury is done to us, we never recover until we forgive.

Alan Paton, S. African author (1903-1988)

Word of the Day = “supplant”

Today’s word is supplant:

supplant \suh-PLANT\, transitive verb:
1. To take the place of (another), especially through intrigue or underhanded tactics; as, a rival supplants another.
2. To take the place of and serve as a substitute for.

Origin:

Supplant derives from Latin supplantare, “to put one’s foot under another, to throw down a person by tripping up his heels,” from sub-, “under” + plantare, “to stamp the ground with the foot,” from planta, “the sole of the foot.”

Example Sentence:

“You think you are wise, Mithrandir.  Yet for all your subtleties, you have not wisdom.  Do you think the eyes of the White Tower are blind?  I have seen more than you know.  With your left hand you would use me as a shield against Mordor, and with your right you would seek to supplant me.”  — John Noble as Lord Denethor in The Lord of the Rings:  the Return of the King.

Quote of the Day - April 24, 2007

Be not ashamed of thy virtues; honor’s a good brooch to wear in a man’s hat at all times.

Ben Jonson
English dramatist & poet (1572 - 1637)

And I’ve done it again!

Well, I wasn’t happy with that cookie-cutter design, so I scrapped that and went with a different technique - I’m using Joomla, a free open-source software that came with my web site. It took some getting using to, but I was able to get it where I like it. Plus, it deals with modules and components, kind of like the widgets and plugins that wordpress uses for its blogs.

I’m not entirely happy with it, but it’ll do for now. Go there and check it out!

Word of the Day - “gregarious”

Here’s today’s word.

gregarious \grih-GAIR-ee-us\, adjective:
1. Tending to form a group with others of the same kind.
2. Seeking and enjoying the company of others.

I don’t think anyone needs an example sentence of this word - at least I hope not!

Quote of the Day - April 23, 2007

I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have plenty of music. It seems to infuse strength into my limbs and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort, when I am filled with music.

George Eliot
English novelist (1819 - 1880)

My Accent

Well, I participated in the quiz over at Jo’s Cafe. And, it came out with what I expected…I’m definitely Southern!

What American accent do you have?
Created by Xavier on Memegen.net

Southern. Love it or hate it, your accent says you’re probably from somewhere south of the Ohio River.

Take this quiz now - it’s easy!

We’re going to start with "cot" and "caught." When you say those words do they sound the same or different?

I’ve done it again…

I’ve changed my web site. I didn’t like the design that I put on there, so I gave it a major overhaul with a new “cookie cutter” design. I wish I could sit down and design it on my own, but I just don’t have the time.

Go check it out and tell me what you think…I’ve got a lot of work left to do, though…Gotta add some stuff.

Search Called Off for Men Missing off the Coast of Australia

I’m sure you’ve heard about this, but in case you haven’t, three men are missing off the coast of Australia. Their catamaran was found Friday with food on the table, the engines running, a laptop up and running. It’s a very bizarre case.

Newscoma has a good post about it.

The police are saying the search was called off "based on expert medical advice, which suggests the men could not have survived this long in the water."

"It’s certainly very unusual," said inspector Warren Webber. "It seems very unlikely we will be able to say exactly just what has occurred at this point in time."

Yup, it is unusual. It’s like something out of the Twilight Zone. What could have happened to these men? Could they have been swept out to sea by rough waters? Were they kidnapped? Who knows? I doubt we’ll ever really truly know.
