British Sailors May Face Trial
According to Fox News and the Associated Press, Iran is threatening to place the British sailors who were captured for allegedly crossing into Iranian waters on trial. (Click here for full article.) This is definitely entering some new, dangerous waters.
Iran’s ambassador to Russia renewed a threat Iranian officials made earlier this week, saying 15 British sailors held by Iran could be tried for violating international law, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported Saturday.
Iran officials say that all Britain has to do is apologize, and the issue could then be resolved. Uh, I don’t think so. First Iran should explain why they released GPS coordinates that placed the sailors in Iraqi waters, then they pulled them once they figured it out and released another set of GPS coordinated that placed them in Iranian waters. What’s up there, Mr. Mahmoud “Iwantajihad” Ahmadinejad?
This statement in the article kills me:
Iran appears intent on sending a message of strength as it faces mounting U.N. sanctions over its uranium enrichment program, which the U.S. and other nations suspect the Islamic Republic is using to develop nuclear weapons.
Duh! I agree with another blogger (sorry, can’t remember where I read it) who said that all this is a diversion..Iran is just trying to get global attention off what it is doing with its centrifuges. I say Iran has crossed a dangerous line, and should be punished for it.
What say you, Prime Minister Blair?
