British Sailors May Face Trial

According to Fox News and the Associated Press, Iran is threatening to place the British sailors who were captured for allegedly crossing into Iranian waters on trial. (Click here for full article.)  This is definitely entering some new, dangerous waters.

Iran’s ambassador to Russia renewed a threat Iranian officials made earlier this week, saying 15 British sailors held by Iran could be tried for violating international law, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported Saturday.

Iran officials say that all Britain has to do is apologize, and the issue could then be resolved.  Uh, I don’t think so.  First Iran should explain why they released GPS coordinates that placed the sailors in Iraqi waters, then they pulled them once they figured it out and released another set of GPS coordinated that placed them in Iranian waters.  What’s up there, Mr. Mahmoud “Iwantajihad” Ahmadinejad?

This statement in the article kills me:

Iran appears intent on sending a message of strength as it faces mounting U.N. sanctions over its uranium enrichment program, which the U.S. and other nations suspect the Islamic Republic is using to develop nuclear weapons.

Duh!  I agree with another blogger (sorry, can’t remember where I read it) who said that all this is a diversion..Iran is just trying to get global attention off what it is doing with its centrifuges.  I say Iran has crossed a dangerous line, and should be punished for it.

What say you, Prime Minister Blair?

Students Walk Out, Demand Statewide Cesar Chavez Holiday

Middle and high school students in several East Los Angeles school districts have walked out of school today, calling for Cesar Chavez Day to be declared an official state holiday.

Click here for the full story.

While I can’t agree with the school walk-out, frankly because they need to be in school learning, I can see their point of wanting Cesar Chavez Day to be a holiday.  Cesar Chavez was to the Mexican-Americans what Martin Luther King, Jr. was to the African-Americans.  He was a great civil rights leader.

According to this article on Wikipedia, Cesar Chavez did much to aid the Mexican-American farm workers.  He is responsible for the organization of the United Farm Workers, he urged Mexican-Americans to register and vote, and he even protested against illegal immigration.

In 1969, Chávez and members of the UFW marched through the Imperial and Coachella Valleys to the border of Mexico to protest growers’ use of illegal aliens as temporary replacement workers during a strike. Joining him on the march were both Reverend Ralph Abernathy and U.S. Senator Walter Mondale. Chávez and the UFW would often report suspected illegal aliens who served as temporary replacement workers as well as those who refused to unionize to the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

So if kids can get out of school for Martin Luther King, Jr. day, why not Cesar Chavez day?

Senate Scuttles the Troops

First the House, and now the Senate.

Along a 51-47 party-line vote, the Senate has passed the bill requiring the troops to pull out of Iraq by March 31, 2008.  (Read the full article here.) $100 billion that could be going to the troops will now be vetoed by President Bush…whenever he finally gets the bill.

First the Senate has to return from Spring Break and then reconcile with the bill that was passed by the House of Representatives.  How long do you think that will take?

I agree with Senator Richard Shelby, R-Alabama, on this one:  "Surely this will embolden the enemy and it will not help our troops in any way.”   Now they’ll just have to wait even longer before they get the equipment they so desparately need to end this war quicker and get the troops home sooner.

Instead of just approving the measure, the senators and the representatives on the left side of the aisle have decided to prolong the appropriation longer by adding not only a ridiculous deadline, but by adding so much pork you would think you were in a butcher shop.

Go to this link to see the summary of H.R. 1591.

Shameless.  Absolutely shameless.  At  least the senators from my state voted NO.

In case some of you haven’t heard, his cancer has come back – this time in the liver.
